Simple Poached Pear Recipe for Mucous, Cough, and Digestion

Posted: December 5, 2017

Both Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda suggest eating warm, cooked, moist foods that incorporate warming spices and nourishing oils to prevent or alleviate symptoms of imbalance that occur within this season. This recipe can be nice to incorporate into your morning, especially to give the digestive process a break and a boost during the holidays. Warm cooked pears with a small amount of ghee first thing on an empty stomach can help relieve constipation. They can also help with coughs and mucus.

Ingredients for 2-3 Servings
2 firm Bosc Pears; sliced long in 4-5 pieces
2″ cinnamon stick
3 whole cloves
2 bay leaves
1/8 tsp sea salt
1 C Water
1/2 tsp Ghee also known as clarified butter (optional)

Instructions
Place pears in a medium saucepan.
Add water, spices and salt.
Turn heat on high until water comes to a simmer.
Cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer 10-15 minutes.
The pears should maintain their shape but be soft. Remove from heat. Let sit, covered for 10-15 minutes.

Add ΒΌ tsp of ghee at the bottom of each serving bowl. Place pears with some water in each bowl. Enjoy the therapeutic effects when eaten on an empty stomach in this simple way. Sprinkle a few nuts or seeds on top to boost the nutrient profile and help sustain the start of your day. Add to your morning bowl of oatmeal, or enjoy with granola for a treat. Eating granola frequently during this time of year can contribute to cold, dryness and require a lot of energy for digestion. So adding warm poached pears and ghee helps to balance those effects. If you suffer from digestive trouble or constipation it may be necessary to skip the granola, nuts or seeds

Variations

Other varieties of pears work too, but cooking time will vary.

Experiment with other warming digestive spices like whole cardamom pods, star anise, black peppercorn, fresh sliced ginger.
Green apples are a delicious and also healthy variation. Peel and slice or dice the apple and follow the same recipe.
